Waltz Says He Will Run for DN County Sheriff in June

Election season has officially begun in Del Norte County with two people throwing their hats into the ring for District 4 Supervisor, Katherine Micks seeking another term as district attorney and Randy Waltz hoping to continue as sheriff.

The filing period for the June 7 California primary opened on Monday, according to Del Norte County Clerk-Recorder Alissia Northrup. Local offices up for election include county sheriff, district attorney, tax collector/assessor, county clerk recorder, superintendent of schools and supervisors for districts 3 and 4.

The filing period for the primary election will be open until March 11. If the incumbent in that office decides against running for re-election, the filing period will be open for five more business days, Northrup said.

“So, say Gerry Hemmingsen doesn’t file,” she said, using Del Norte’s current District 4 supervisor as an example. “If he doesn’t file, then his seat would remain open for five additional days.”

So far, two candidates — Brian Stone and Patty Adams — have filed papers to run for Del Norte County District 4 supervisor, which is currently represented by Gerry Hemmingsen, Northrup told the Wild Rivers Outpost on Thursday.

Del Norte’s current sheriff, Randy Waltz, who was appointed to the position on Sept. 28 following incumbent Erik Apperson’s resignation, has taken out election papers for the June primary, Northrup said.

Northrup said she intends to seek another term as Del Norte County clerk-recorder, and Clinton Schaad is seeking another term as auditor-controller.

No one has taken out papers intending to run for Del Norte County District 3 supervisor, which is currently represented by Chris Howard, Northrup said. There have also been no filings yet for tax collector, assessor or superintendent of schools.

Those offices are currently represented by Barbara Lopez, Jennifer Perry and Jeff Harris, who is also Del Norte Unified School District superintendent.
