County Supervisors To Consider Allowing Correctional Officers To Be Extra Law Enforcement During Emergency

Supervisors will consider adopting a resolution Friday that allows Del Norte County correctional officers from the jail to be available for deployment in an emergency.

If approved, the resolution will add Del Norte County to the other 32 California counties listed in Penal Code Section 830.1. The penal code allows sheriffs in those counties to increase law enforcement resources by using correctional officers for emergency management, according ot the staff report.

The resolution also proposes to change weapons requirements for off duty correctional officers. Currently, if a correctional officer, who works with jail inmates, wants to carry a weapon for protection when they’re off duty they have to apply and pay for a two-year concealed carry weapon permit and pay to renew the license every two years, according to the resolution.

If county supervisors approve the resolution, correctional officers will have the same concealed carry weapons status as a deputy sheriff while off duty, according to the staff report.

The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors will meet at 10 a.m. Friday in the Flynn Center, 981 H Street in Crescent City.
