Call For Open Alcohol Containers At Home Depot Leads to Potential Car Embezzlement Arrest

From the Crescent City Police Department:

On 4-7-23 Officers from the Crescent City Police Department were dispatched to Home Depot for the report of a vehicle with open containers of alcohol inside. The driver of the vehicle was initially inside Home Depot upon arrival and then tried to leave the scene. Officer Miller and Sgt. Pearson then conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle and contacted the driver, Alexander Elkins (age 24).

Home Depot staff then advised Officers that Elkins had just shoplifted items from the store.

Elkins was initially arrested for 459.5 PC, shoplifting. Officers conducted an inventory search of the vehicle incident to being towed and located a loaded stolen handgun from the Sacramento area and drug paraphernalia were also located. During the investigation Officers were also able to determine that the vehicle was embezzled from Avis Car Rental.

Elkins was booked into the Del Norte County Jail for shoplifting 459.5 PC, felon in possession of firearm 29800 PC, possession of loaded firearm 25850 PC, misdemeanor possession of stolen property 496 PC, felon in possession of ammo 30305 PC, and Carrying concealed firearm 25400 PC.

The investigation into the embezzled vehicle is still ongoing.
