Injured Hiker Rescued From Natural Bridges Area Near Brookings

From Curry County Sheriff John Ward:

On Sunday July 3, 2022, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received information from the Brookings Police Dispatch of a person at Natural Bridges, about fifteen miles north of Brookings, who had fell while hiking the trail and possibly had a broken ankle. Brookings Dispatch paged out Cal Ore Life Flight and Cape Ferrelo Fire Department.  Sheriff’s Dispatch sent Patrol Deputies and did a call out for Search and Rescue members to respond.  The information relayed was that the victim, nineteen-year-old Cayley Mead from Bainbridge Island, Washington, was about .2 tenths of a mile in on a steep trail.

Deputies and SAR and other First Responders arrived and attended to Mead, who was in severe pain from a broken ankle.  SAR, Cape Ferrelo Fire and Cal Ore Life Flight crew were able to secure Mead in a stokes and carried her back out to the awaiting ambulance.

Once again, the cooperation and partnerships with local agencies worked very well, especially the communication between the two dispatches.  The dispatchers are the ones who are instrumental in getting accurate information and coordinating the response resources.
