Though it won’t appear on the June 7, 2022 ballot, the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will discuss efforts to repeal Measure R, the 1 percent sales tax measure voters narrowly approved in 2020.
County Administrative Officer Neal Lopez will give a presentation Tuesday on the fiscal impacts to the county the Measure R repeal is successful.
The repeal is being spearheaded by the Crescent City-Del Norte County Taxpayers Association, which gathered the 416 signatures needed to place the initiative on the June ballot.
However, according to County Clerk-Recorder Alissia Northrup, supervisors’ request on March 8 for an analysis on the proposed repeal forced the vote to be delayed until November. Northrup said Monday that her office has already begun sending sample ballots out to Del Norte voters for the June election.
In her petition, author Linda Sutter states that county employees haven’t voluntarily reduced their benefits and salaries and have “given themselves a raise.” There’s been no effort to reduce overhead costs or trim existing programs, she states. And “low-priority and unnecessary expenses remain in place,” she says.
Sutter’s petition also criticizes Del Norte Unified School District and the Citizens Oversight Committee tasked with monitoring how a $25 million bond voters approved in 2008 is spent.
Measure R was initially projected to generate $1.2 million in revenue annually, which would be used for law enforcement, emergency response, public infrastructure and other capital projects. According to Lopez, Measure R revenue is projected to be $1.6 million by the end of the fiscal year.
The Board of Supervisors meets at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Flynn Center, 981 H Street in Crescent City. Meetings can be viewed online by clicking here.
