If you ever wanted to spend the summer alongside the crystalline waters of the Smith River, a volunteer gig with the Six Rivers National Forest may be just the thing.

From the Six Rivers National Forest:

EUREKA, Calif., May 7, 2021 — The Gasquet Ranger District within the Six Rivers National Forest is seeking to fill campground host positions at three of the Smith River National Recreation Area’s premier campgrounds during the summer season (May-October 2021). Interested parties (18 & older) may spend the summer camping at Panther Flat, Patrick Creek, or Grassy Flat campgrounds.

After choosing a location to serve as host at, interested parties are asked to fill out a volunteer application on Volunteer.gov, keyword, Six Rivers National Forest.

Campground hosts will receive proper training, a uniform, and a free campsite. Hosts are responsible for providing their own tent, trailer, or camper to stay in. Typical campground host duties include greeting visitors and campers, tracking campground usage and fee payment, provide information to visitors and campers, monitoring and maintaining campground facilities and grounds, cleaning bathroom and shower facilities, monitoring trash and recycling receptacles, address campers concerns or issues, promptly report any issues, concerns, or needs to recreation staff.

All campgrounds/day use areas include access to the beautiful Smith River. Smith River offers fishing for steelhead, trout, and salmon. During the summer months, the pure, clean waters of the Smith River are perfect for swimming, rafting, or fishing and the forested mountainsides present occasions for hiking, bird watching, wildflower walks, or perhaps just lounging in the sun. Summers are dry with highs in the 80-100°F degree range. Moving into Fall, days are warm, nights are cool and crisp, and moisture arrives.
