Art Scene: New Exhibits, Classes for Veterans
A new exhibit featuring artist Carol Long will be featured at the Del Norte County Courthouse.

“Nature’s Magic”
Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) presents the work of artist Carol Long. Carol was recently featured in DNACA’s Juried Art Show, and her nature-themed exhibit is now on display at the Del Norte Courthouse through June 17, 2021. The courthouse is located at 450 H St. in Crescent City, and is open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays, except for state holidays. Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) presents Creative Writing with teaching artist Billie Ruth Furuichi. Classes take place Tuesdays and Thursdays April 20 - June 10, from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. via Zoom. Each week participants will discuss different writing styles, and share prompts and ideas for students as they create their own works. All levels, including beginners, are welcome! Classes are free-of-charge to Veterans, Active Military, and their family members, and family members can participate whether or not the Veteran does. Pre-registration is REQUIRED. “Writing the Natural World”
Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) presents “Writing the Natural World” poetry classes with teaching artist and published author Terri Glass. Classes will take place Wednesdays May 5 - June 23, from 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. via Zoom. Participants will discuss poetic writing techniques/topics, and create original works. All levels, including beginners, are welcome! Classes are free-of-charge to Veterans, Active Military, and their family members, and family members can participate whether or not the Veteran does. Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) presents the work of artist Edward Reidel, who recently won First Place in DNACA’s 29th Annual Juried Art Exhibition. His exhibit “Del Norte Scenes” is on display at the 2nd floor mezzanine of the CEC Airport at 1650 Dale Rupert Rd, March 5 - June 17 as part of DNACA’s Art in Public Places program. The airport terminal’s regular hours are 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. weekdays, 6 a.m. - 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 6 a.m. - 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. Sundays. Crescent City Art
Crescent City Art at 1228 2nd St., Crescent City, is now open to the public Wednesday - Saturday from 12 p.m. - 5p.m. The Gallery is offering Mother’s Day card making classes for children ages 4-16 on May 6, 2021 from Noon - 2 p.m. for $5 per person for supplies. Spring activities are easy with the book “Colorful Critters of Del Norte County.” The book is made for meditative coloring and stress reduction for adults, and fun learning for children, with hand drawn illustrations by local artist Rosemary Garcia. Highlighting the “wild side” of Del Norte County with colorful critters, the book includes captions in English, Tolowa, and Yurok, and at the end of the book interesting facts about the featured animals are included. A LIMITED SUPPLY of “Colorful Critters of Del Norte County” is available at the Requa Inn at 451 Requa Rd, Klamath, and at Wright’s Custom Framing in Brookings. Crescent Harbor Art Gallery’s April Artist of the Month is Debbie Dean. Debbie has worked as an art docent and art teacher before moving to Crescent City, and she has a love for oil painting, and painting animal portraits. The Gallery of Arts & Culture at 175 H St., Crescent City, presents featured artist John Hewitt, with a display of his watercolor paintings. An award-winning artist, he has also been featured in national art magazines, including Plein Air. As a physician, he worked in our local hospital emergency room for years. Hewitt’s artistic works feature seascapes and beach scenes of our local area. The Gallery also features the works of many other artists in a variety of mediums including fine art bowls, sculpture, and jewelry. Manley Art Center and Gallery
Manley Art Center and Gallery is located at 433 Oak St. in Brookings. Photographer Calvin Casey is the Gallery’s April featured artist with his exhibit “Famous Landmarks”, which features vivid colors and interesting local flavor subject matter. Recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Calvin uses photography to stay active and slow the progression of the disease. The Gallery is open 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with COVID-19 protocols in place.
