(UPDATED) Hotels Can Offer Emergency Shelters to Motorists Stranded Due to Police Activity on 101

(Updated at 10:51 p.m.)

The Yurok Tribe's emergency services manager will open tribe's Holiday Inn Express to motorists stranded on U.S. 101 due to police activity near Last Chance Grade, Del Norte Emergency Services Manager Kymmie Scott told the Wild Rivers Outpost.

Meanwhile, the local chapter of the American Red Cross is putting together emergency kits with blankets, water, snacks and hygiene products for those who are stranded.

According to Scott, the Del Norte Office of Emergency Services is working with the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office and the Yurok Office of Emergency Services to get those kits to those stranded between South Beach and Klamath.

The Red Cross chapter from Humboldt County is also working with the Yurok Tribe's Office of Emergency Services, Scott said.

Traffic on U.S. 101 has been stopped while the California Highway Patrol has been negotiating with an armed subject, according to a CHP-Crescent City Facebook post.

U.S. 101 has been closed between milepost marker 14 and milepost marker 22 — near the vista point and Last Chance Grade north of Klamath — according to a Facebook post from the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office.

At 5:30 p.m., the sheriff's office reported that deputies were stopping traffic at U.S. 101 and Humboldt Road in Crescent City due to the ongoing police activity. They urged people to continue avoiding the area, but said there was no ETA for when the highway would reopen.

Under an order from the Del Norte Office of Emergency Services, hotels can "allow emergency rental of rooms to non-residents of Del Norte County who are trapped on the Crescent City side of the highway," Emergency Services Manager Kymmie Scott said.

The Humboldt Office of Emergency Services has issued a similar order enabling hotels to offer shelter to northbound motorists stranded on U.S. 101 due to the ongoing police activity, Scott said.

Both the sheriff's office and the California Highway Patrol were working the scene, Scott told the Outpost.

According to a CHP dispatcher, all available officers were at the scene of the incident.
