Del Norters may receive a knock on the door, despite COVID-19, as U.S. Census Bureau enumerators contact those who have yet to fill the survey out.

Currently 58 percent of Del Norte County households have responded to the 2020 U.S. Census, according to Alannah J. Smith, program coordinator for the California Center for Rural Policy at Humboldt State University.

Census Bureau employees will also be at the Family Resource Center of the Redwoods, 494 Pacific Avenue in Crescent City from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to help people fill out the Census form, Smith said.

“The mobile question assistance center is completely set up by the U.S. Census Bureau,” Smith said. “Census Bureau employees will be there to help people fill out the form. They’ll have an iPad or an iPhone and offer assistance with different languages available.”

Census takers began interviewing households nationwide that haven’t responded online, by phone or by mail to the 2020 Census.

Census Bureau employees will present a resident with an official identification badge including their name, photograph, a Department of Commerce watermark and an expiration date.

Upon request, enumerators will provide their supervisor’s contact information or the phone number for the local Census Bureau regional census center.

To avoid a visit from a census taker, complete the 2020 Census online, by phone or mail.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic prompted stay-at-home orders in California, Smith and others participating in complete count committees in Humboldt, Trinity and Del Norte counties conducted meetings and outreach efforts remotely.
