Lock Down Lifted At Del Norte High School; Officers Believe Toy Gun Was At Root Of Threat

Officers have lifted a lockdown at Del Norte High School and other area schools following rumors of a threat Tuesday afternoon.

According to Del Norte Unified School District representatives, law enforcement responded to reports of a student with a firearm. However after interviewing students, law enforcement believe the fire arm was a toy, DNUSD posted to its Facebook page at about 2:30 p.m.

The incident is still under investigation.

A rumor of a threat called into the Del Norte High School office prompted a call to law enforcement and orders to put the campus on lock down, Del Norte Unified School District spokesman Michael Hawkins told the Wild Rivers Outpost on Tuesday.

Students are also sheltering in place at Mary Peacock and Bess Maxwell elementary schools, Castle Rock Charter School and College of the Redwoods’ Del Norte Campus, Hawkins told WRO at about 1:30 p.m.

Law enforcement are searching the area and haven’t found evidence of a threat, Hawkins said. Officers don’t believe there is currently any danger, Hawkins said.

“It may have been a kid outside of the high school who was the source of the rumor (and) did not re-enter the high school after it went on lock down,” Hawkins said, adding that students and staff at other schools in the area were told to shelter in place as a precaution. “We are putting all schools in the area on lock down just to make sure nothing happens.”
