Stand Off: Parolee At Large Tried To Run Over Deputies, Probation Officer, Refuses To Come Out Despite Being Gassed
A parolee at large is still barricaded in a Bolen Ln. home after he attempted to run over two Del Norte County deputies and a probation officer with a Bobcat on Wednesday.
Ronald Berry, who has had a warrant for his arrest since he was released from prison in 2015, crawled underneath a house on Bolen Lane and has been ignoring commands since about 1:30 p.m., Del Norte County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven told the Wild Rivers Outpost. Steven said law enforcement can still see Berry through some of the vents underneath the house, though they used gas to try to get him out.
“We’re now considering ventilating the house and sending in a dog,” Steven said.
Berry, who also has three warrants out of Curry County and was involved in a pursuit with the California Highway Patrol last week, got into a dispute with a neighbor on Wednesday, Steven told the Outpost. After the neighbor notified the sheriff’s office, Berry tried to run two deputies and a probation officer over before running into the house, Steven said.
“He’s done tonight,” Steven said. “He’s just prolonging the inevitable. We’ve got the place surrounded and he’s ours.”
Someone known to Berry owns the house he has barricaded himself in and he has permission to be there, though the sheriff’s office are still trying to sort out the details, Steven said.
According to Steven, the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office initially arrested Berry for a property crime. Berry was paroled in 2015, but never checked in with his parole officer, Steven said. Berry has had a warrant out for his arrest ever since then, in addition to the three extraditable warrants from Oregon.
During last week’s pursuit, the CHP ended the chase near the home Berry is currently in, Steven said.
