A 56-year-old Crescent City man is dead and a 52-year-old Smith River woman faces murder and manslaughter charges after her car allegedly collided with his motorcycle on Monday.

Winston Luttrell was riding his 1997 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound north of Mouth of Smith River Road at about 6:37 p.m. Monday when Shakiyla Bryant made a left turn onto the highway within Luttrell's path of travel, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Though Luttrell applied the brakes, he was unable to avoid colliding with Bryant’s 2018 Jeep Wrangler. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

Authorities say alcohol was a factor in the collision. Bryant was booked into the Del Norte County Jail where she faces charges of driving under the influence, murder and manslaughter, according to Del Norte County Sheriff Garrett Scott.

The collision prompted CHP to divert traffic from U.S. 101 to Ocean View Drive for about three hours. Smith River Fire and Del Norte Ambulance personnel provided assistance.
