Thirty volunteers filled up a 30-yard trash bin in about an hour-and-a-half at a community cleanup on Old Mill Road on Saturday.

Del Norte County District 2 Supervisor Valerie Starkey said she organized the cleanup after coming to an agreement with code enforcement to get a homeowner help to clean their property up before being cited. In addition to filling the trash bin, volunteers, including those who work with Del Norte Mission Possible, spent the rest of the day separating tin, metal and wood.

“I will say that, and this is their words not mine, for them to have to wake up on a Saturday at 8 o’clock for them to get out of the swamps to get to this cleanup was a feat in and of itself, but 30 of them showed up,” Starkey said. “Thirty of them worked hard. It was something that I will always cherish in my heart the work people did for this community to help cleanup the blight that is around here.”
