Grants Pass Man Jailed In Oregon After Assault Incident On U.S. 199 In Del Norte County

From the California Highway Patrol

A 49-year-old Grants Pass man is in a Josephine County Jail in connection with an assault with a deadly weapon incident that occurred Tuesday on U.S. 199 in Del Norte County.

Aaron John Smock allegedly drove his vehicle into a logging truck near milepost marker 8 on the highway, pinning the 67-year-old driver into the front wheel, the California Highway Patrol reported Thursday.

Smock fled the scene by the time CHP officers responded at about 7:10 p.m. heading northbound. Officers provided first aid to the victim before he was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital with major injuries.

Oregon State Police later pulled Smock over in Cave Junction and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and other outstanding warrants from Oregon, the CHP reported.

In addition to several DUI charges, Smock faces two hit and run charges and a charge of reckless driving, according to the Josephine County’s Jail Inmate Inquiry web page.

California Highway Patrol officers are currently investigating the hit and run incident.
