Crescent City Public Works Contain Small Overflow At Wastewater Treatment Plant

Crescent City public works crews vacuumed up about 150 gallons of fluid that overflowed from the wastewater treatment plant Friday morning.

The overflow made it about 8 feet outside the plant’s gates at 210 Battery Street near Beachfront Park, City Manager Eric Wier told the Wild Rivers Outpost. The spill was reported at about 7:30 a.m. and public works crews arrived at 7:40 a.m. It was cleaned up by about 8 a.m., Wier said.

“It was completely recovered by our public works crew in a vacuum trailer and then returned back to the plant,” Wier said.

He said he’s not sure what caused the overflow.

The area outside of the gates has been barricaded off, Wier said. He said there are state mandates to report the spill if the it makes it into a storm drain or into a body of water, but that didn’t occur in this case.

“Since it was contained in a small volume, there is a certain level of report that needs to be done, but it’s not that immediate [unlike] when it reaches surface waters,” he said.
