Go Fly A Kite For a Good Cause; Fundraiser Seeks To Put Socks, Shoes on Kids' Feet
A local nonprofit organization is giving people a chance to soar to new heights while making sure local kids can put their feet into new socks and shoes.
Realtors For Community is holding its first-ever Kites for Kids Festival near the House of Jambalaya at the Crescent City Harbor on Aug. 31. A $20 donation will get folks an octopus kite. There will also be live music, food trucks and local merchants selling their wares. Revelers can also purchase a kite to give to a youngster attending the festival.
Proceeds will benefit the organization’s Kicks for Kids program, said Patricia Swift, a realtor with at Potter Real Estate Group. Swift co-chairs Realtors For Community with Angel Verdugo, of Verdugo Real Estate Group.
“We work with the school district,” Swift said. “If they have students who can’t afford socks or shoes, we will get them socks or shoes.”
People can buy kites ahead of the festival by visiting the Facebook page.
Previously known as the Community Outreach Assistance Team, Realtors For Community also spearheads the Journey Home Initiative, which provides a path to rehabilitation services or family for those wanting to get off the streets. According to Swift, this sometimes includes helping survivors get out of domestic violence situations.
This year, Realtors for Community helped 12 people get where they needed to go, including one person who wanted to go back to Michigan, Swift said. She said Del Norte Mission Possible will link those in need with Realtors For Community. The two organizations will work on plane or bus tickets for the individual.
This year, with Swift and Verdugo as chairs, Realtors for Community is focusing on youth. The Kites for Kids festival and Kicks for Kids program are new.
Swift said the organization’s plan is to create a form it will provide to Del Norte Unified School District. Though they’re still fine tuning the details, that form will contain information such as shoe size.
Realtors for Community is part of the Del Norte Association of Realtors.
The Kites for Kids Festival will be held from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 31. For more information, click here.
