Filing Period Still Open for Crescent City Council, Harbor District Seats; School Board Incumbents Are Running Unopposed

The filing window has yet to close for those seeking seats on the Crescent City Council and the Crescent City Harbor District Board of Commissioners this November.

But don’t expect to cast a ballot for Del Norte County Unified School District, since the incumbents, Trustee Area 3 representative Frank Magarino and his Trustee Area 4 colleague Charlaine Mazzei, are running unopposed, according to Del Norte County Clerk-Recorder Alissia Northrup.

Since Crescent City councilors Blake Inscore, who’s serving as mayor, and Kelly Schellong, who was appointed in January 2023 to fill in for Beau Smith, are not seeking re-election the filing period, for that race has been extended until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The same can be said for the Harbor District Board, since incumbents Brian Stone, Harry Adams and Wes White are not seeking re-election, according to the Del Norte County Elections Office.

The candidates who have filed for open Crescent City Council seats include incumbent Jason Greenough, Candice Tinkler, who currently serves on the Measure S Oversight Committee, and Daran J. Dooley.

Linda Sutter, Annie Nehmer, John Evans and Dan Schmidt have turned their papers in for the Harbor District Board of Commissioners, Northrup said. Devon Morgante has taken out papers, but hasn't filed them yet, she said.

Nehmer and Sutter both ran for Harbor District in 2022. Sutter also ran unsuccessfully for the District 5 seat on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors.

Schmidt had been editor of the Del Norte Triplicate until about two years ago.

Meanwhile, local Republican Michael Greer faces a run-off election against Democrat Chris Rogers for the California Assembly District 2 seat. If he’s successful, the DNUSD Board will find itself with a vacant seat. According to Northrup, the remaining trustees could appoint someone to serve for the two years left in Greer’s term.
