Curry County’s newest commissioner is seeking a place on BOEM’S Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force.

If his colleagues approve on Wednesday, Jay Trost would replace former commissioner Court Boice on the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s task force.

Trost was appointed to his position on the Board of Commissioners in March.

Trost and his colleagues may also take a formal position regarding proposals to develop two areas off the Oregon coast for offshore wind energy. Their regular meeting follows a series of open houses BOEM held in Gold Beach, Coos Bay and Brookings last week.

Part of a 60-day public comment period that began Aug. 15, the open houses focused on two call areas for offshore wind energy development — one about 13.8 miles offshore of Charleston, Oregon and the other roughly 13.8 miles offshore from Gold Beach and Brookings.

The Brookings call area begins 13.8 miles offshore of Gold Beach and Brookings and extends to about 46 miles offshore, according to BOEM. The eastern boundary water depth ranges from 410 to 1,115 feet. The area stretches roughly 42 miles from north to south and 22 miles east to west consisting of about 286,444 acres, or 448 square miles, according to BOEM.

The Coos Bay call area starts at 13.8 miles offshore from Charleston, Oregon, and extends to about 65 miles offshore. Its eastern boundary water depth ranges from 394 to 722 feet.

It’s 67 miles north to south and about 41 miles east to west consisting of about 872,885 acres, or 1,364 square miles.
BOEM’s Oregon Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force consists of coastal county representatives, tribal representatives as well as state officials.

The Curry County Board of Commissioners meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday at 94235 Moore Street in Gold Beach. The agenda packet is available at www.co.curry.or.us.
