From Curry County Sheriff John Ward:

On Friday, March 24th, 2023, SAR Coordinator, Sergeant Jared Gray got a call from a concerned citizen that a friend of his, who lives in an RV up on Iron Mountain, had not been heard from for almost two months. The concerned citizen said he normally goes up once a month to pick up his friend, take him to town for supplies and then take him back to his RV. The concerned citizen said he had not been able to drive to his friend’s location due to the heavy snow and was worried that he did not have enough supplies to last him or could get down off the mountain if he needed to do so.

Sergeant Gray and two SAR members, Steve Dicicco and Will Tucker responded to the area with the Sheriff’s Sno-Cat. After cutting out several large trees from the snow covered roadway, and traveling about ten miles in the snow, they reached the location where fifty-three-year-old Duane Stainbrook was staying in his RV. Stainbrook declined any assistance, saying he and his dog were fine and had enough supplies to last him until he could get back down the mountain. The SAR members gave Stainbrook some extra supplies they had with them and returned to Gold Beach.
