James Stewart Herriott, fondly known as Jim, passed away peacefully on May 1st, 2023, in Hiouchi, California. Born on December 30th, 1944, in Eureka, California, Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and community.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Carolyn; his five children, Ian (April), Mara, Lynn, Todd, and Scott (Michele); and his three cherished grandchildren, Tommy Mathews, Emmett Herriott, and Lillian Herriott. Together, they shared in the joys of life and created lasting memories.

Jim's early years were spent in Eureka, where he attended Marshall Elementary School and Eureka Junior High School before graduating from Eureka High School in 1963.

He attended Humboldt State College and College of the Redwoods.

In 1964, Jim enlisted in the Army Reserve and completed his heavy equipment mechanic training at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. His enthusiasm for mechanics led him to be hired as a heavy equipment mechanic apprentice by the California Division of Highways in 1968. After successfully completing the program in 1971, he worked as a journeyman mechanic until his well-deserved retirement in 2005.

Jim's commitment to his community was evident in his service as the chief of the Hiouchi Volunteer Fire Department for ten years. Under his leadership, the department grew and thrived, providing essential emergency services to the residents of Hiouchi and the surrounding areas.

Outside of his professional life, Jim had a passion for sailing and enjoyed spending time on the water. As often as possible, he could be found taking in the beauty of nature and relishing the freedom that sailing provided. In quieter moments, Jim was known to challenge himself with Sudoku puzzles, a testament to his intelligence and love for problem-solving.

Jim will be remembered as a funny, intelligent, and creative individual. His quick wit and ability to find humor in any situation endeared him to many.

In celebrating Jim's life, we honor a man who dedicated himself to his family, his work, and his community. His legacy will live on through the memories and stories shared by those who knew him.

Jim's life is a testament to the power of love, laughter, and perseverance. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of those who were touched by his presence. Rest in peace, Jim, knowing that your memory will be cherished forever.

He is survived by his sisters Donna, Carrie, Marion, Kathy, Sue, Laura and his brother Bob and their spouses and families.

Memorial Service will be held on July 15th at 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm at the American Legion Hall 1555 Gasquet Flat Rd, Gasquet, CA 95543
