CAVE JUNCTION – Motorists should expect congestion and delays along Redwood Highway (U.S. 199) between Cave Junction and the California border the next three weeks as paving work begins Sunday night, August 13.

Construction will require lane closures both day and night, each Monday through Friday. Traffic control will be provided by flaggers and pilot cars. Most delays will be less than 20 minutes.

Prime contractor Knife River Materials will grind and pave the highway between Cave Junction and O’Brien (milepost 29-36) on weeknights, Sunday evening to Friday morning. Additional work, such as installing safety features and performing electrical work, will take place during daylight hours.

On the week of August 21-25, contractors will apply a chip seal between O’Brien and the border (milepost 36-41). This work will take place during daylight hours. Due to loose rock on the roadway, drivers are advised to slow down and allow additional space between vehicles.

The final week of the month may involve striping, cleanup and other work.

Local driveways: In areas where the highway is limited to a single lane for construction, we ask local residents to wait at the end of their driveways for a pilot car before turning onto the highway. ODOT will post signs at each driveway, and flaggers will provide traffic control at local intersections.

This $8.5 million project will also add safety features to Redwood Highway and apply a chip seal to an 8-mile section of Oregon 42 (Coos Bay-Roseburg Highway) near Winston.
