Del Norte County voters wanting more information about candidates in local races will have two forums to view next week.

Meanwhile, voters should already have received sample ballots in the mail, County Clerk-Recorder Alissia Northrup said. They should start receiving their actual ballots next week, she said, and can begin turning them in once they get them.

“Polls will be open on election day,” Northrup said, referring to Nov. 8. “If you want to vote at the poll, do not destroy your ballot. Just take it with you and surrender it at the polls. It makes it easier on them and on us.”

True North Organizing Committee will hold virtual forums on Oct. 11 for candidates participating in the run-off election for the District 4 and 5 seats on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors.

Candidates vying for Trustee Area 2 and 5 seats on the Del Norte Unified School District Board of Trustees will also participate in the True North forum, according to organization volunteer, Denise Schnacker.

True North will stream the forum on its You Tube and Facebook pages. A link to the page will be on True North Organizing Network’s Facebook page by Wednesday, Schnacker said.

The public has a chance to submit questions for a second candidates forum hosted by the Del Norte Association of Realtors via email.

Candidates in the District 4 and 5 supervisorial races will face each other at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Crescent Fire Protection District’s fire hall, 255 W. Washington Boulevard in Crescent City.

The District 4 county race features run-off election candidates realtor Patty Adams and rancher Joey Borges.

For District 5, appointed county supervisor, Susan Masten, is running against former Del Norte County sheriff, Dean Wilson.

The Association of Realtors will hold another forum at about 7 p.m. Oct. 12 featuring candidates for the Trustee Area 2 and 5 seats on the Del Norte County Unified School District Board of Trustees.

Will Meriwether, a professor at College of the Redwoods, will run against retired attorney Abbie Crist for the Trustee Area 2 seat on the DNUSD Board.

In Trustee Area 5, retired special education teacher, Michael Greer, will run against Yurok Tribal Councilman Phillip Williams.

Due to a recent change in how Del Norte Unified School District conducts its elections, only voters living within Trustee Area 2 and 5 will be able to vote for candidates running for those seats, Northrup said. Previously, every voter in the county could participate in DNUSD trustee elections, she said.

DNUSD and the County Office of Education, which shares boundaries, completed the transition from a "hybrid at-large" election model to a by-trustee area model in February to avoid a potential lawsuit for violations of the California Voting Rights Act.
