Five candidates are vying for the empty District 5 seat on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors.
County Clerk-Recorder Alissia Northrup said everyone, including those running for the District 4 seat, turned in their paperwork on Wednesday, though the District 5 candidates had only a week to do so. Northrup said she was still verifying the signatures for District 4 candidate Margaret Sargent and District 5 candidate Terri Colton.
In addition to Sargent, other candidates for the Del Norte County District 4 race includes Crescent City Harbor Commissioner Brian Stone, local businesswoman Patty Adams and Joey Borges, owner of Borges Dairy.
Since the incumbent, Gerry Hemmingsen, did not seek re-election, the filing period for that race was extended through Wednesday, according to Northrup.
The candidates for the District 5 seat, which was left vacant following the March 2 death of Bob Berkowitz, include former sheriff Dean Wilson; former Yurok Tribal Councilwoman Susan Masten; David Jones, a member of the Klamath Chamber of Commerce; David Markel, who lives in the Bertsch Tract; and Terri Colton, who sought the District 5 seat in 2016.
The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors last week agreed to place the District 5 seat on the June 7 ballot. Depending on the number of people who run for the seat, a candidate receiving 50 percent plus 1 of the vote on June 6 could be sworn into office after the election.
However, the California governor can appoint a replacement to serve until the June primary or, in the event of a run-off election, until the Nov. 8 election, according to County Counsel Joel Campbell-Blair.
The election for the District 5 seat will use district boundaries from 2011. This means voters who found themselves in District 4 after the Board of Supervisors adopted new election maps in December will be able to vote for both seats, according to Campbell-Blair.
There are three candidates vying for the District 3 seat, including incumbent Chris Howard, Del Norte Unified School District trustee Frank Magarino and Hiouchi resident Joe “Hank” Akin.
