Del Norte County’s appointed sheriff, Randy Waltz, has announced his resignation as of Monday afternoon, County Administrative Officer Neal Lopez told the Wild Rivers Outpost.
Lopez said his staff will meet with the operations lieutenant and staff at the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday to determine how the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office will function until a new sheriff takes the helm.
Lopez said he wasn’t sure if the Board of Supervisors will appoint a sheriff to serve from March until the June 7, 2020 primary election. Former Crescent City Police lieutenant Garrett Scott is running unopposed for sheriff, though he still has to appear on the ballot in June, according to Del Norte County Clerk-Recorder Alissia Northrup.
The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors can take applications from people who are "qualified under statute" to be sheriff and go through an interview process, Lopez said. Or the Board can just appoint someone who comes forward, is interested and qualified for the position, Lopez said.
Waltz's resignation comes after Del Norte County District Attorney Katherine Micks filed felony charges against him of perjury, voter registration fraud and election fraud. According to Micks, Waltz allegedly listed a false address on his California Voter Registration form and used that address to unlawfully register to vote and to declare his candidacy for sheriff.
That address — 16855 U.S. 101 N #2 in Smith River — is a short-term vacation rental, the Sacramento Bee reported last week.
