Del Norte Records its 43rd COVID-19 Death; Hospitalizations Drop to 3
A 43rd person has died from the coronavirus, local health authorities reported Wednesday.
This is the second COVID-19 fatality reported in Del Norte County this week. However the number of people admitted to Sutter Coast Hospital with coronavirus symptoms have decreased from 10 on Monday to three on Tuesday.
There were still three people hospitalized with COVID-19 symptoms on Wednesday, according to the county’s COVID-19 Information Hub.
Meanwhile, 36 new coronavirus cases were reported to the Del Norte Public Health Branch on Wednesday, including one new case among the county’s incarcerated population. There were a total of 419 active cases in Del Norte as of Wednesday.
At Pelican Bay State Prison, there are currently 41 active cases among its inmate population with 51 new cases reported in the last 14 days, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
When asked about the decrease in hospitalizations from Monday to Tuesday, the county’s public health officer, Dr. Aaron Stutz, said though he didn’t have “all the information yet,” the majority of those patients had been discharged.
However, he pointed out that the numbers posted on the county’s information hub doesn’t tell the whole story.
“Interpreting what happened from these changing numbers between one day and the next is kind of error prone when you’re just looking at raw numbers,” he said.
COVID-19 vaccines are available from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.
United Indian Health Services is also offering COVID-19 vaccines from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at Howonquet Hall in Smith River and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Elk Valley Rancheria Tribal Office on Howland Hill Rd. in Crescent City.
