Candlelight Vigil Commemorating 1853 Massacre of Tolowa Village Set for Sunday

The Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation will hold a candlelight vigil Sunday in remembrance of those they lost in the Chit-xu village massacre on Feb. 15, 1853.

The village of Chit-xu Taa-ghii~-li~ consisted of 40 houses at the mouth of the Chetco River near the present-day city of Brookings. The vigil will include moments of reflection and acknowledgment followed by homemade soups, bread, salad, tea and coffee.

The vigil will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the mouth of the Chetco River at the Port of Brookings, 16282 Lower Harbor Road in Brookings.
