The candidate roster is set for most races in Del Norte County, though the filing period has been extended until Wednesday for a handful of seats.

Major local races to appear on the Nov. 8 ballot include the Crescent City Council, the Crescent City Harbor District and the Del Norte Unified School District Board of Trustees. There’s the runoff election for the districts 4 and 5 seats on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors. Voters will also make a second decision on sales tax measures they initially approved in 2020.

For the Crescent City Council, Blake Inscore is running unopposed to serve out what had been Alex Campbell’s term, according to County Clerk-Recorder Alissia Northrup.

Campbell won a seat on the Council in 2020, but pleaded guilty to perjury and election fraud and resigned in 2021 following allegations that he lived outside city limits.

Ray Altman, who is seeking a four-year term on the City Council, was appointed as Campbell’s replacement but only until the next election, Northrup said.

Isaiah Wright is also seeking another term as a Crescent City Councilor, according to Northrup. However, because Inscore filed for the short-term race, the filing period for the City Council remains open through 5 p.m. Wednesday, Northrup said.

Five people are competing for the two seats up for election on the Crescent City Harbor District Board of Commissioners. In addition to incumbents Rick Shepherd and Gerhard Weber, candidates include Annie Nehmer, Linda Sutter and Kevin Hendrick.

Nehmer, a frequent Harbor District attendee, spearheaded the Children’s Business Fair in June at the harbor.

Sutter, a county resident, has previously sought a seat on the Del Norte County Fair’s Parks and Recreation Board and, in 2016, ran for District 5 Supervisor. Earlier this year, she authored the initial petition to repeal Measure R.

Hendrick is chair of the Del Norte Democratic Central Committee and was director of the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Board.

For Del Norte County Unified School District, Don McArthur is running unopposed for another term as Trustee Area 1 representative.

The filing period for trustee areas 2 and 5 is still open through Wednesday as incumbents Angela Greenough and Jamie Forkner have not submitted their election paperwork, according to Northrup.

William Meriwether, a history professor at College of the Redwoods, is the only candidate who has filed for the Trustee Area 2 seat so far, according to Northrup.

For DNUSD Trustee Area 5, candidates so far include Brigette Finigan, Phillip Williams, Sunny Athey and Mike Greer.

Finigan is a guidance technician with the Yurok Tribe and is originally from Klamath.

Williams represents the North District on the Yurok Tribal Council.

Greer is a retired special education teacher and currently a substitute in DNUSD schools. He moved to Del Norte County after his family lost their home in the Camp Fire in 2018.

For the District 4 County Supervisor race, Joey Borges and Patty Adams will face each other in a runoff election.

In District 5, the two contenders will be appointed county supervisor, Susan Masten, and former sheriff, Dean Wilson.

Voters will also have a chance to repeal Measures R or Measure S, depending on where they live. Measure R is the county’s 1 percent sales tax measure that passed in 2020.

Measure S is also a 1 percent sales tax measure voters approved in 2020 but benefits Crescent City.

A plethora of smaller districts have elections this year as well, including the Klamath CSD, the Fort Dick Fire District, Crescent Fire District and the Gasquet CSD.
