Del Norte County saw its 27th death from COVID-19 over the holiday weekend, the Public Health Branch reported Tuesday.

One-hundred and thirteen new cases were also reported to health authorities on Tuesday, including two among Del Norte County’s incarcerated population. There are currently 233 active cases and 18 people at Sutter Coast Hospital with COVID-19.

Del Norte County Unified School District also released its weekly COVID-19 statistics showing a total of 31 cases amongst its student and staff population.

At a community town hall meeting last week, Superintendent Jeff Harris told the community that the district had to quarantine about 300 students. On a Tuesday Facebook post, the district stated that it is “sending entire classes of the younger grades home if there is a positive case in the class, even if students are not confirmed close contacts, just to be cautious.”

These new numbers come ahead of a third community meeting Thursday focusing on the ongoing surge in COVID-19. People can send questions by emailing publiccomment@crescentcity.org and participate by clicking here.
