McGuire to Host Two Community Meetings Focusing on Wildfires
Del Norte County’s representative in the state senate will hold two public meetings focusing on wildfire prevention and preparedness.
These meetings come as California invests more than $1 billion this year on hiring hundreds more firefighters, purchasing additional equipment, including engines, helicopters, planes and bull dozers and creating more fire breaks, according to a news release from State Sen. Mike McGuire’s office.
The first meeting, held at noon Monday, will include the California Coastal Conservancy and will focus on its role in wildfire prevention, according to the news release.
The Coastal Conservancy is expected to invest millions in wildfire prevention grants for dead and dying tree removal and vegetation management around communities. Cities, counties, special districts and non-profits are urged to attend as they will be able to learn how to apply for future grants and how to be successful in securing those dollars, according to McGuire’s news release.

The second meeting, held at 6:30 p.m. May 27, will focus on resources to protect communities from wildfires. It will also focus on how families can prepare for wildfire season and “what we can all expect in the years to come when it comes to wildfires and climate change.”
That meeting will feature representatives from Calfire as well as Michael Wara, director of Stanford University’s Climate and Energy Policy Institute.
