Slide activity at Last Chance Grade picked up on Saturday evening, but the catchment Caltrans and GR Sundberg crews constructed ahead of the weekend’s rain did its job.

“On Sunday we were able to haul off all the material that came off,” Caltrans District 1 spokesman Myles Cochrane told the Wild Rivers Outpost on Monday. “Today we’re still hauling off slide material, but we’re able to keep things at 30 minute delays, so that’s a good sign.”

The plan for 30-minute delays on U.S. 101 at Last Chance Grade will continue for Tuesday, though it’s subject to change.

Crews have worked to "reslope" the hill at the slide-prone area south of Crescent City since roughly Feb. 13, bringing in heavy equipment and shutting the road down for about two hours during the weekday. Spotters and flaggers continue to be on site 24-7 to monitor slide activity and ensure motorist safety.
