Brookings-Harbor SD Releases Guidelines for Spectator Sports

With Curry County in the moderate, or yellow, risk-level category, Brookings-Harbor School District is preparing for spectators to attend games and competitions.

The yellow category indicates moderate spread of the COVID-19 in Curry County. Under many activities, including restaurants and bars, places of worship and indoor gyms can operate at 50 percent capacity, according to coronavirus.oregon.gov.

In a Monday news release, Brookings-Harbor School District outlined the guidelines for watching indoor and outdoor sports:

Brookings-Harbor School District will permit spectators to attend home athletics events and competitions to the extent allowable under Oregon Health Authority County Risk Level requirements.

As of February 26, 2021, Curry County is in the “moderate” COVID-19 risk level of “yellow.” Here is what is allowable under state guidelines for moderate risk-level counties:

  • Indoor Sports: Up to 50 percent crowd capacity is allowed when 120 square feet per person is maintained, or 100 people, whichever is smaller. This number includes all athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators.

  • Outdoor Sports: A maximum of 150 people is allowed. This number includes all athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators.

If in the future, our county risk level goes back to “low” risk, we will follow the requirements for the “green” risk level. If the county numbers continue to trend upwards and we move to “high” or “orange,” we will follow the requirements for the orange level.

For the purposes of calculating the maximum number of spectators for outdoor events, we will consider the areas within the fenced area of play. If additional people elect to watch the event from outside the fence or from a parking lot, that will not be counted towards the maximum number of people, and tickets will not be required in those areas. If you elect to watch the games from these areas, our district requests that you maintain precautions such as maintaining six-feet of physical distancing and wear masks.

Requirements:

The school district is required to be able to contact-trace all people in attendance for athletic events. Face masks will be required for all spectators for both indoor and outdoor activities.

Process:

For each event, the district will calculate the number of all athletes, staff, and officials.  Spectator tickets will be issued to the student-athletes prior to each home game.  Tickets will be required to enter the spectator areas for each event. For Example: If middle school football has a total of 75 athletes, coaches, and officials for an event, then 75 spectator tickets will be issued to our home team athletes to share with their guests.

We will only be permitting home team spectators due to the significantly restricted numbers and to reduce the risk to our community. Other teams will likely be doing the same thing, so family members of our student-athletes should not plan on being able to attend any away games or activities. In addition, some of the other communities in our league may be at a higher risk level and may not be able to permit any spectators at all.

Livestreaming:

We recognize that for some of the events, the number of spectator tickets may be significantly less than the demand. To help address this, we plan to continue to livestream all home athletic events via our district website or social media channels such as Facebook or YouTube Live.
