Crescent City Man Pleaded Guilty to Second-Degree Murder In Connection With Parents' Deaths; Sentenced to At Least 30 Years in Prison
A 41-year-old man will serve at least 30 years in state prison in connection with the 2020 deaths of his parents, according to the Del Norte County District Attorney.
Casey Rhyn Potter pleaded guilty on Jan. 21 to two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of 77-year-old Brian Gilbert Potter and 71-year-old Sherrie Lynn Potter, both of Crescent City, Del Norte County DA Katherine Micks told the Wild Rivers Outpost on Wednesday.
Potter will serve 15 years to life in state prison for each count of second-degree murder, Micks said. Potter was sentenced on Feb. 22, she said.
“The two counts are stacked (to) 30-years to life,” Micks said.
The bodies of Brian Gilbert Potter and Sherrie Lynn Potter were found at their Lesina Road home north of Crescent City on Feb. 16, 2020. Del Norte County Sheriff’s deputies named Casey Rhyn Potter a person of interest and arrested him at a bus stop in Crescent City the following day.
On March 5, 2020, Potter’s attorney questioned his client’s mental capacity to assist in his own defense. Potter allegedly referred to his parents as clones and trespassers, according to attorney Keith Morris.
Though a Del Norte County Superior Court judge ruled a few weeks later that Potter was competent to assist in his defense, there was no trial, according to Micks.
