Voters will have a chance to meet candidates running for Del Norte Unified School District Board of Trustees next week.

True North Organizing Network is seeking questions for a candidate forum featuring the contenders for the Trustee Area 3 and 4 seats on the DNUSD and County Office of Education boards. The forum will be held via Zoom on Sept. 30.

Forum hosts will ask candidates to weigh in on family engagement, educational equity, special education and other topics. They also hope to receive questions from the public that all candidates can answer, helping voters get a better sense of what their values are.

Questions can be submitted via email at amyc@truenorthorganizing.org.

Frank Magarino is currently representing Trustee Area 3 on the DNUSD and DNCOE boards. He is being challenged by former Pine Grove Elementary School principal Billy Hartwick and Sheryl Steinruck, language specialist with the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation.

Trustee Area 3 includes Smith River, Hiouchi and Gasquet. Though candidates must live within their trustee area, all Del Norte County voters will be able to choose a candidate for that seat on Nov. 3.

Trustee Area 4’s current representative, Charlaine Mazzei, is running unopposed. Her seat primarily includes the Fort Dick area. Mazzei was appointed to the School Board in March, replacing Roger Daley who resigned in January.

True North’s candidate forum will be held from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 via Zoom. Register for the forum by clicking here
