Del Norte, Curry County Art Scene For Oct. 2, 2020


A plethora of visual art opportunities abound in Del Norte and Curry counties, including a grant opportunity and a chance to participate in the Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness's annual juried art show.

Grant Opportunity
Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness is awarding over $12,000 to local art and cultural organizations or groups that serve local communities of color, or whose constituency is mainly communities of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, Hmong, and others. This funding may be used for general operational support. It is not necessary to use the funding for new projects. This program is funded by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act through the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the California Arts Council, a state agency. The deadline for submitting applications is October 30. DNACA Juried Art Exhibition - Call for Artists
Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness is seeking artists for their 29th Annual Juried Art Exhibition. Artists may submit up to two (2) pieces, and artwork that is juried into the show will remain on display at the Del Norte Courthouse through January 14, 2021. Funds for Artists’ Resilience Call for Artists
The Funds for Artists’ Resilience (FAR) is searching for local artists of all types who are interested in creating new public art works with the theme of “Resilience”. Individual projects will be funded up to $1,000 and collaborations will be funded up to $5,000. FAR is a collaboration between the Ink People Center for the Arts, Trinity County Arts Council, and Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA), with funds provided from the Humboldt Area Foundation and Wild Rivers Community Foundation. Brian Scott Gallery
Brian Scott Gallery, located at 515 Chetco Ave in Brookings, showcases more than 25 artists. October’s Artist of the Month is Phyllis Earls, who works with acrylics and mixed media. Phyllis will also be at the Second Saturday Art Walk October 10, to meet the public and talk about her work. The Gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. where you can enjoy ocean views from the third-floor patio. Masks are required in the Gallery. Art in Public Places Exhibit
DNACA's Art in Public Places exhibit in the Del Norte Courthouse features a collection of photographs by Gloria Bobertz entitled “The Captures Around Me.” Also featured is an exhibit by photographer Kyoko Apperson entitled “Earthly Charm.” The exhibits are available for viewing through November 19, 2020. The courthouse is located at 450 H St in Crescent City, and they are open from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. weekdays, except for state holidays. DNACA’s Art in Public Places exhibit on the 2nd floor mezzanine of the CEC airport at 1650 Dale Rupert Rd is an exhibition of works by painter Horst Wolf entitled “Random Ramblings.” This exhibit has been extended through January 7, 2021. The airport terminal’s regular hours are 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. weekdays, 6:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturdays, and 6:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Sundays. California Redwoods Art Association
Ed Reidel is the Artist of the Month at the 2nd Street Gallery, 1228 2nd St, Crescent City. Other exhibits include Susan Humphry at the Del Norte County Library, Catherine Balck at the Wild Rivers Foundation offices, and an exhibit of various artists at the Sutter Coast Hospital Infusion Center and in the Main Hall at Sutter Coast Hospital. The Gallery will hold an outdoor Art Sale on October 10, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The Art Sale will be open to the public. Artists who are interested in displaying their art at the event should contact the Gallery for more information. The 2nd Street Gallery is open to the public Thursday - Saturday from Noon - 5:00 p.m. For information, call 707-460-1414.

Coast Redwoods Art Association
Coast Redwoods Art Association’s Crescent Harbor Art Gallery is pleased to present new art inspired by our local beach and redwood landscapes, including Arlene Krogstad’s original oil entitled “California Dreaming.” The Gallery’s October Artist of the Month is Cheryl Anderson. The Gallery is located at 140 Marine Way and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and closed Monday. Face coverings are required. For more information, call 707-464-9133.

Gallery of Arts and Culture
The Gallery of Arts & Culture at 175 H St, Crescent City, is now open. Masks and gloves will be required according to the Department of Public Health, until they are certain the virus is abating. The Gallery has been sanitized and freshened, and is ready to welcome guests and visitors. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. For more information, call the gallery at 707-464-4745. 

Ellensburg Theater Company
ETC’s Thursday Night Jam Sessions have resumed at the theater, 94196 W Moore St, Gold Beach. All musicians are welcome to attend, as are those who come to sing along or just enjoy the music. $2 donation per person requested. Face coverings and social distancing required. Fog and Fine Art Gallery
Located in Wright’s Custom Framing and Art Supply at 810 Chetco Ave in Brookings, the Fog and Fine Art Gallery displays many local artists showing a variety of media including jewelry, pottery, painting, and more. The Gallery also has a dedicated classroom that inspires new and seasoned artists with workshops. The Gallery is open from 10:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Saturday. Manley Art Center and Gallery
Manley Art Center and Gallery is located at 433 Oak St. in Brookings. The gallery has a limit of no more than 10 visitors inside the gallery at this time due to rules related to the COVID-19 virus, and masks are required whenever social distancing cannot be maintained.
