Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office Secretary Diana Stanley told the Outpost that 43-year-old John David Pires was arrested after responding officers spotted him fleeing the scene of the fire, covered in soot and ash.

Crescent City Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene and, despite a propane tank explosion, firefighters were able to safely extinguish the flames.

CCFR Chief Bill Gillespie told the Outpost that the fire caused enough damage to consider the home a total loss.

No other residents were located inside the home at the time of the fire.

Pires is currently being held at the Del Norte County Jail on $200,000 bail.
