County Supervisors to Discuss Sales Tax Measure
County supervisors will consider a resolution Tuesday that, if approved, will place a 1 cent sales tax measure for public safety on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.
The resolution contains the language voters could see in November if four out of five members of the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors approves it on Tuesday.
According to the resolution, the sales tax measure will “support vital local services including: providing support for law enforcement for emergency response; repairing potholes and maintaining streets; preparing for and responding to natural disasters and health emergencies; maintaining emergency dispatch services for fire, ambulance and law enforcement; maintaining jail and criminal justice services; addressing blight and public nuisances; and other general services and infrastructure.”
The measure would impose a 1 cent sales tax in the unincorporated area of Del Norte County, generating about $1.2 million annually, according to the staff report. It also mandates the creation of a citizens oversight committee, which would consist of five members of the public, the county administrative officer and auditor.
That committee would prepare an annual report on the revenue the measure generates and how the county is using it. The county administrative officer and auditor or their designees would hold non-voting positions on the committee.
The Crescent City Council is pursuing a similar 1 cent sales tax measure that would apply within its jurisdiction if voters approve it. If approved, the $1.2 million the tax would generate would pay for fire and police, pothole repair and other road improvements and the Fred Endert Municipal Pool.
In addition to discussing the proposed sales tax measure, county supervisors will hear an update from Public Health Officer Dr. Warren Rehwaldt on COVID-19 in Del Norte County.
The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors meets at 10 a.m. Due to COVID-19 precautions, people can join the meeting remotely by visiting http://www.co.del-norte.ca.us/.
