New Crescent City Councilors Will Take Their Seat, Swimming Pool Update On Monday's Agenda
Alex Campbell and Beau Smith will hear an update regarding the reopening of the Fred Endert Municipal Pool at their first meeting as Crescent City Councilors on Monday.
Campbell and Smith will assume their seats for their first term while their colleague Jason Greenough will begin his second. They replace Heidi Kime and Alex Fallman, who will be recognized for their service on Monday.
Though the city’s swimming pool is likely to stay closed as Del Norte County is in the state’s most restrictive purple tier on its Blueprint for a Safer Economy, staff moved forward with recruiting an aquatic supervisor. The city made an offer that was accepted by a candidate with “extreme experience working in aquatics and recreation,” according to the staff report.
Councilors shuttered the pool when the COVID-19 pandemic began in March. Currently, the county’s status in the purple tier indicates there is widespread risk of viral transmission.
There were also economic concerns to reopening the pool. With city staff projecting a severe budget shortfall for the 2020-21 fiscal year, keeping the pool closed would keep about $30,000 per month.
On Nov. 3, Crescent City voters approved Measure S, which will provide revenue that can support operating and maintenance expenses at the pool.
The Crescent City Council meets at 6 p.m. Monday. The public can participate online via Zoom. The meeting will also be live-streamed on You Tube.
