Brookings-Harbor SD Retreats To Distance Learning Through Winter Break; Seven New COVID-19 Cases Reported In Curry County Wednesday

The Brookings-Harbor School District will offer distance learning for all grades through winter break.

BHSD reached this decision Wednesday — the day Curry Health Network reported seven new COVID-19 cases to Curry County Public Health. These new cases have brought Curry County’s total number of positive cases to 153 with two deaths since the pandemic began. There are 44 active cases in Curry County currently, according to Curry Public Health.

In a letter to the community Wednesday, BHSD Superintendent David Marshall said the district will provide “limited in-person instruction” focusing on the social and emotional needs of students.

Even if Curry County hits the “red zone” with more than 60 COVID-19 cases or a test positive rate of more than 10 percent, BHSD will still be able to offer limited services and support in person, Marshall said.

“Electing to go to (comprehensive distance learning) will provide staff and students some consistency and less chance for another disruptive switch from in-person to CDL on short notice,” Marshall said. “It also provides some time to address concerns about personal metrics impacts from Thanksgiving travel and gatherings.

Following winter break, BHSD looks to having students in the classroom as much as possible, according to Marshall.

Meanwhile, Curry County Public Health is conducting case investigation and will reach out to those expected of exposure to COVID-19.
