Sheriff's Deputy Carried Disabled Elderly Man From Burning Brookings Home as Cars Exploded, Oregon State Police Says
Oregon State Police press release:
On November 12, 2020 at approximately 11:05 p.m., Deputy Stout from Curry County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a structure fire in Brookings, Oregon. Deputy Stout and OSP Trooper Erik Holland were first on scene. The house was 2 stories and was fully engulfed in flames. When they arrived on scene, there was no information about occupants inside. The weather was stormy and heavy winds swirled in the canyon. They were unsure where the driveway was located as the house was up a hill.
Deputy Stout parked up the hill and Trooper Holland parked down the hill. As Deputy looked up the driveway, he observed an elderly lady scurrying down the driveway with her walker. He then looked for Trooper Holland. He spotted Trooper Holland fireman carrying an elderly man who was disabled. The man appeared out of it as he was unable to walk and did not have proper clothing on. Trooper Holland carried the man approximately 50-75 yards away from the burning house, exploding cars, and exploding cooking grills. Trooper Holland saw the exploding cars and continued to carry the man down the entire driveway. Trooper Holland’s bravery, courage, and self-less act saved a human’s life that night.
When you ask a Trooper about these types of incidents the answers always come back very similar: All in a day’s work and I was so happy that I was in the right place at the right time.
