Six Rivers National Forest Extends Deadline for Improvement Projects
The Six Rivers National Forest has extended the deadline for natural resource improvement projects that benefits National Forest land. From a news release:
EUREKA, Calif. – The Six Rivers National Forest has once again extended the deadline for Humboldt County and Del Norte Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) project proposals for natural resource improvement projects that benefit National Forest System (NFS) lands and local communities. The proposal deadline is now Monday, June 1. Authorized through the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act (Secure Rural Schools Act), each RAC has 9 to 15 members representing diverse interests related to public land management.
Project proposals 1) may be submitted by community-based organizations, tribes, individuals, or government agencies that are eligible for funding consideration with the US Forest Service; 2) must demonstrate a benefit to NFS lands or resources; and 3) should have broad-based support with objectives that may include, but are not limited to:
· Road, trail, and infrastructure maintenance or obliteration,
· Soil productivity improvement,
· Improvements in forest ecosystem health,
· Watershed restoration and maintenance,
· Restoration, maintenance and improvement of wildlife and fish habitat,
· Control of noxious and exotic weeds, and
· Re-establishment of native species.
“We’ve already gotten a number of great proposals,” said Devin McMahon, the forest’s RAC coordinator. Adding, “But since we’re waiting for our RAC committees to be approved in Washington, there’s still time for additional proposals.”
Project proposals must be submitted to Devin McMahon by June 1, 2020, to be considered for funding. Project submission forms (https://go.usa.gov/xpBzY) and information on project requirements (https://go.usa.gov/xvmrT) are available online. Project proposals for both RACs will be evaluated as early as this summer. The meetings to review the proposals will be open to the public.
Volunteer RAC members advise the forest about the use of monies allocated through the Secure Rural Schools Act (www.fs.usda.gov/main/srnf/workingtogether/advisorycommittees and www.fs.usda.gov/pts). Committees were formed to encourage cooperation between the US Forest Service and local communities on projects that provide mutual benefits to forest resources and communities.
