Solid Waste Authority To Revisit Recology Del Norte Contract Extension Discussion

The local solid waste joint powers authority Tuesday revisit a discussion on extending Recology Del Norte’s collections franchise contract for 10 years.

The Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority Board of Commissioners will also recognize the winners in this year’s Tansy Games on Tuesday. According to a DNSWMA press release, 16 teams collected nearly 10,000 pounds of tansy ragwort, an invasive plant that’s toxic to livestock.

According to the authority’s news release, the top winner in the Tansy Games is Hiouchi resident Craig Strong who gathered 1,540 pounds of tansy ragwort and will win $500.

Other winners in the Tansy Games include Denny Haddad, Jeanette Pulley, the V-Dubs Macaela Curtis and Nicole Chavez, Doug Wakefield, Aaron Burger, the Simmons family, Kelly Worley, Amie Kreth, the Northwest Trail Riders, Amy and Thor, Marion Kirkpatrick, Leonard DeVries, Moby’s Blues, Helen DuVernay and Donna Thompson.

The Tansy Games started on June 22 and lasted through Aug. 22.

Meanwhile, discussion about Recology Del Norte’s collections franchise contract comes at the request of General Manager Jeremy Herber. In August, Herber told commissioners that since his company was spending more than $200,000 to replace street-side waste receptacles, he wanted to make changes to the agreement that has been in place since 2011.

If Solid Waste commissioners approve extending its contract with Recology Del Norte, the agreement would expire in 2033, according to Herber.

Herber’s request also comes about two months after garbage rates increased 6.12 percent.

At its Aug. 27 meeting, Solid Waste commissioners directed staff to begin contract negotiations with Recology.

Herber included purchasing the new trash and recycling containers on a list of requested changes to Recology Del Norte’s contract, which is estimated to cost about $215,000.

Herber also requested a new contract include a recycling theft ordinance, weight limits on trash compactors, a transfer station in the northern part of the county, according to the staff report.

The continued need of reducing the amount of garbage in Del Norte’s recycling stream may also be addressed in the contract extension. According to the Solid Waste Authority’s staff report, Recology Del Norte hired a zero waste coordinator to address that issue.

Other items on the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority agenda Tuesday include a letter to State Sen. Mike McGuire and Assemblyman Jim Wood to address State Senate Bill 1383 on short-lived climate pollutants.

The Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority will also meet as the Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Service Authority and hear an update on the authority’s activities.

The Solid Waste board will meet at 4 p.m. in the Flynn Center at 981 H Street in Crescent City. Agendas are available at www.recycledelnorte.ca.gov. For more information, call (707) 465-1100 or email dnswma@recycledelnorte.ca.gov.
