Supes To CIF: Keep Saturday's Championship In Del Norte
County supervisors approved a letter to the California Interscholastic Federation urging them to allow Saturday’s championship football game to be played in Del Norte County.
The proposed letter was added to the Del Norte County Supervisor’s agenda Tuesday at the last minute. It addresses the possibility that the CIF, the governing body for high school sports in California, may move the state championship game pitting the Warriors against the El Monte Lions to Humboldt State University to avoid injury to players due to a wet field, according to District 3 Supervisor Chris Howard. The concern of potential injury came from El Monte High School, Howard told his colleagues Tuesday.
However, quoting from Del Norte Unified School District Superintendent Jeff Harris, Howard said there are no plans to move the game. But if the field does get too soft, the game may be held at Humboldt State University, Howard said.
“They’re bringing in giant tarps to cover the center of the field where the major issue is,” Howard said, referring to the school district. “We won’t truly know until tomorrow afternoon or even Thursday whether the field is safe to play.”
CIF doesn’t intend to move the game unless it’s absolutely necessary, Howard said, citing Harris.
According to a Facebook post, DNUSD is urging people to wait to purchase game tickets until after 5 p.m. Wednesday if they’re concerned about a potential change of venue. If the game is moved and those who already bought tickets aren’t able to attend, refunds will be available, according to the district.
The football game will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at Mike Whalen Field in Crescent City.
