Hike Into the Secret Places of Tolowa Dunes

Del Norters will be able to explore a little-known forested area of Tolowa Dunes State Park with a naturalist Sunday.

Sandra Jerabek, director of the Tolowa Dunes Stewards, will lead hikers through Sweetwater Creek Canyon as it meanders through the dune forest before ending at the ocean. The hike’s highlights include native plant and tree identification, geomorphology, Tolowa Dee-ni’ history and culture.

The 2 1/2 mile hike is considered moderate and involves short off-trail travel through thick vegetation and fallen trees, according to a press release from sponsors Tolowa Dunes Stewards and the Redwood Parks Conservancy. There will also be a creek crossing using a tree trunk. Hikers will be assisted with the crossing.
Jerabek coordinates and oversees habitat restoration and conservation projects for rare and endangered species within the dunes.

Meet at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Lake Earl Information Center, 2591 Old Mill Road in Crescent City. Attendees should wear closed-toed hiking shoes, a hat, long-sleeved shirt and a pants. Bring drinking water and mosquito repellant. For more information, call Sue Calla at (707) 465-6191.
