Learn About Smith River Salmon — RSVP Required

From the Tolowa Dunes Stewards:

The Tolowa Dunes Stewards and Redwood Parks Conservancy will host our final Tolowa Coast Education Event of 2022 on Saturday December 3. Join Fisheries Biologists Jolyon Walkley and Jesse Nolan for a field trip and discussion on all things salmon! Topics include the salmon lifecycle, identification, behavior, and current salmonid monitoring efforts in the Smith River.  We may be able to witness spawning salmon.  Email tkdettmar@gmail.com to reserve your spot (location details provided upon RSVP).

About the presenters:

Jesse Nolan, who was raised in Hiouchi, has taken his dad’s passion for fishing and turned it into a career in fisheries biology. He graduated from Humboldt State University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries Biology and started working in the field the day after graduation. He has worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, Green Diamond Resource Company, the Smith River Alliance, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and is currently a Tribal Resource Specialist with the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation. Jesse has participated in nearly every fisheries monitoring project that has occurred in the Smith River Watershed since 2010.

Jolyon Walkley obtained a BS and MS in Fisheries Biology from Humboldt State University and has participated in and led a wide range of aquatic investigations in Northern California and Southern Oregon’s oceans, estuaries, and streams. He has enjoyed a wealth of time in the field from trawling offshore and in eelgrass beds to pulling seines across mudflats and pristine headwater streams. Jolyon has previously worked for the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, California Sea Grant, the Smith River Alliance, California State Parks, the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation and recently joined California Department of Fish and Wildlife as the Smith River Aquatic Scientist.
