42-Year-Old Man Faces Murder, Attempted Murder Charges in Connection With Stabbing

Hughes | DNSO

A 42-year-old man is facing murder and attempted murder charges in connection with a stabbing incident that occurred at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies arrested Gabriel Joseph Hughes and recovered a knife near the 1300 block of Keller Avenue, Del Norte County Sheriff Garrett Scott told the Wild Rivers Outpost.

Deputies responded to the scene after receiving a report of a young woman who was screaming that she had been stabbed, Scott said. When they arrived on scene, they found a young woman in her 20s “down with a stab wound to the neck area,” he said.

Deputies found a second victim, a man in his late 60s to early 70s, about 50 to 60 feet from the first victim with multiple stab wounds, Scott said. They secured the scene, rendered first aid and an ambulance transported the victims to Sutter Coast Hospital where the male victim was pronounced deceased, Scott said.

The Del Norte County District Attorney's Office and California Highway Patrol helped process the scene, Scott told the Outpost.

This is an evolving story. The Wild Rivers Outpost will update with further information as it becomes available.
