A report of a man brandishing a machette toward people at Kid Town in Crescent City on Thursday turned into a scuffle with police.

Crescent City police officers arrested 33-year-old Jamel Lowery, who was allegedly kicking, punching and spitting on them, according to a CCPD Facebook post.

Officers deployed K9 Lt. Kai, but even after he bit Lowery, the suspect continued to fight.

From a CCPD Facebook post:

On 6-24-21, just after 1700 hours, Officers from the Crescent City Police Department responded to the area of Kids Town Park in Crescent City for a report of a male subject brandishing a machete towards people. Upon arrival in the area CCPD Officers located Jamel Lowery (age 33) in the park holding a machete.

Lowery then fled from the officers briefly before they were able to set a quick perimeter and block him from going back into the play area. Lowery refused to listen to verbal commands and de-escalation tactics that several officers attempted. Lowery was then taken down to the ground and continued to fight with officers as he was being arrested. Lowery was kicking, punching, and spitting on officers during the encounter, which led to K9 Lt. Kai being deployed for the safety of the officers involved. Lowery continued to fight with officers after being bit by Lt. Kai. Officers were able to handcuff Lowery and then placed him in a patrol vehicle. Lowery then threatened an officer prior to spitting on him and Lt. Kai.

One officer received a laceration to their leg and another officer had a small injury to their shoulder that occurred during the incident. Both officers were able to return to full duty immediately.
Lowery was then lodged in the Del Norte County Jail for violations of 148 PC- Obstructing/Resisting, 69 PC - Resisting by threat or violence, 243 (b) PC - Battery on a Peace Officer, and 600 (b) PC - Interfering with a Police K9.
