A Crescent City man was killed in a head-on collision in the Klamath area Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Daniel Raper, 66, was just north of mile-post marker 10.80 on U.S. 101 when he lost control of his 1997 Ford Explorer, veered across the double-yellow line and collided with a 2017 Acura MDX driven by Xiangping Zhang, who was traveling south.

According to Del Norte County Undersheriff Randy Waltz, Raper had lived in McKinleyville until recently.

Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, Raper died of his injuries at the scene, according to the CHP. Del Norte Ambulance transported Zhang and his two passengers to Sutter Coast Hospital.

Alcohol or drugs don't appear to be a factor in the collision, according to the CHP.

Klamath Fire Protection District, Del Norte Ambulance and Yurok Tribal Police assisted. CHP is still investigating the collision.
