Uncharted Shores Academy Follows DNUSD's Lead, Cancels Classroom-Based Instruction Due to COVID-19

Uncharted Shores Academy is cancelling its classroom-based instruction starting Monday in response to COVID-19.

The charter school in Del Norte County made its decision after the Del Norte Unified School District Board of Trustees on Sunday voted unanimously to close schools Monday through the end of its spring break on April 20.

USA students will continue with independent studies during the closure and will be in contact with the school's teachers, according to director Shari Smithson. Teachers will also continue assigning work and will conduct conferences with parents.

However all after school electives will be cancelled. The school will provide more information on how school lunches will be distributed and how families can pick up their assignments, according to Smithson.

Though the DNUSD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to cancel school through the end of spring break, the board will revisit its decision at its March 26 meeting.

DNUSD will continue provide meals to students in need. According to Director of Nutrition Services Deborah Kravitz, this may be in the form of cold lunches and take-home breakfasts at each school site.
