School board members will interview candidates to replace Roger Daley as District 4 representative for Del Norte Unified School District on Thursday.

The five candidates include Joey Borges, Judith Cordts, Charlaine Mazzei, Mike Mealue and (Albert) George Olson, according to a DNUSD news release. The Board will interview the first three candidates on Thursday and will interview the final two on Monday.

Both meetings will be held in open session and the public will have 20 minutes to provide spoken or written comment on each candidate’s interview, according to the Board. The school district will also accept written comments until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The Board of Trustees will vote on Daley’s replacement on Feb. 27. He or she will begin their term no later than March 2, according to DNUSD.

Cordts was Daley’s predecessor on the Board of Trustees, serving until 2016. Mazzei ran against Daley and Cordts for the District 4 seat in 2016.

Mealue is a retired teacher and former president of the Del Norte Teachers Association and is currently spearheading a recall effort against each member of the Board of Trustees as well as Jeff Harris, the Del Norte County Superintendent of Schools.

Mealue began the recall process in January during a stalemate over salaries and benefits between the union that represents the district’s certificated staff and DNUSD. Though contract negotiations between both parties have resumed, they have yet to reach an agreement.

Thursday’s meeting will be held at 4 p.m. at the Educational Resource Center, 400 Harding Avenue in Crescent City. Written comments can be submitted to the district office, 301 W. Washington Boulevard in Crescent City, or emailed to lprouty@delnorte.k12.ca.us.
