Del Norte Unified Town Hall Meetings to Address School Reopening, Special Education

Del Norte Students Will Start School Online On Aug. 31

###

Two town hall meetings Tuesday will give parents, grandparents and other community members to get more information about what students will face when the 2020-21 school year begins.

Del Norte Unified School District officials will also take questions and concerns about its special education program. The meetings will be held via Zoom at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday.

These meetings come after the DNUSD Board of Trustees voted on a phased approach to reopening school during the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools will begin with online learning for all students on Aug. 31 — a week after the original Aug. 24 start-date.

According to the district’s reopening plan, students will learn remotely through Sept. 11 and then transition to Phase 2. This involves bringing small groups of students into campus for interventions and other targeted learning opportunities.

The district’s plan calls for beginning Phase 3, or blended learning, on Oct. 5 for K-8 students. Del Norte High School will not advance beyond Phase 2.

Blended learning means DNUSD students will be in the classroom two days a week and doing online lessons for the remaining three days. Parents can also choose to have their youngsters learn remotely regardless of what learning phase the district is in.

DNUSD will progress through the learning phases based on Del Norte County’s overall progress in addressing the spread of COVID-19.
